It all started in 2007 when I was driving down a gravel road towards the ghost town of Smuts excited to photograph abandoned buildings. What I saw first, once I pulled up the hill was a large church with a huge dome. Growing up I had never seen anything like this. The architecture was beautiful and the location was even better. This was the moment where I became interested in rural churches, mainly Ukrainian. I learned more about how many rural churches were in the province and was shocked to learn there are hundreds. I started marking them on the map and hitting the backroads.
My little hobby photographing Ukrainian churches turned into a decade long project. I was determind to photgraph every rural and urban Ukrainan church in the province. In between focusing on Ukrainian churches I also photographed any rural church in the area.
Not knowing what to do with the thousands of images taken I decided to share my project online. This website along with an instagram and facebook page have been created to share these photo's along with some history and soon some video.
